Welcome, New Students!
Orientation and Training Week kicks off with a warm welcome for Trinity's newest Titans
Cheered on by a distanced throng of teachers and returning student leaders, Trinity’s newest Titans walked onto campus for New Student Orientation this morning. With every student and teacher wearing a mask, and the Estes Athletic Center full of desks placed six feet apart, this year’s orientation looked different than any before.
“The desks are farther apart and there are signs everywhere, but some things aren't going to change,” said Head of School Rob Short in a brief welcome address to new students. “The way that we support and nurture our students. The way that we embark upon discovery…”
“We chose you because of who you are,” Short continued. “A lot of you have incredible talents in things like building community, academics, the arts, athletics and we get excited about things like that. This year, more than ever, we're excited about you.”
Throughout the day, new students were welcomed by volunteer student Trail Guides, met teachers from each academic department, got a crash course in the modified academic schedule, and got to open and set up their brand new Macbooks right out of the box. Students also watched a student produced video on the school’s T.I.T.A.N.S. values (Trustworthy, Intention, Tough, Altruistic, Neighborly and Sincere).
“This is a historic year, and you're probably a little fatigued to hear about that, but I look at it with a lot of optimism,” said Mr. Short. “The silver lining here and the opportunity is that we all have new ways that we're going to chip in as a community to support one another in the interest of safety. Wearing your mask. Keeping six feet apart… Yes there will be challenges but also huge opportunities.”
Student Government Association President Jessica Moore ’21 encouraged new students to make the most of their time at Trinity. “Sign up for the club that you're interested in. Become friends with your teachers,” she said. “Your time here really flies by fast, so my advice to all of you is to be open to possibilities.”
Orientation and Training Week will continue through the week and will include sessions for all returning students later in the week. The first official day of the school year — with half of students on campus and half participating remotely — will be Monday, August 31.
