Boys Basketball Leadership Transition

Torey Burston ’12 will become next head coach of Trinity boys basketball
Trinity Episcopal School has announced a leadership change in its boys basketball program, as the school will move in a new direction at the head coaching position.

Following the pandemic, Coach Andrew Blazar led the rebuilding of the Trinity basketball program with the team’s win total improving each year. This season, despite starting four new players and navigating one of the program’s most challenging schedules in recent memory, Trinity finished with a winning record. Coach Blazar has helped reestablish a strong foundation for the program and leaves it in a positive position moving forward, with a core group of returning starters and key contributors.

“We are grateful to Coach Blazar for his commitment, leadership, and the time he has invested in our student-athletes and program,” said Director of Athletics Adam Lonon. “He played a meaningful role in stabilizing and rebuilding Trinity basketball, and we appreciate the standard he helped renew.”  Coach Blazar’s annual basketball camps will continue as planned this summer.

Trinity is pleased to announce that Torey Burston ‘12, Trinity alum and current Student Life Coordinator and current JV Boys Basketball Head Coach, will assume the role of Varsity Head Coach. A former scholarship walk-on at VCU, Burston brings a strong understanding of the game along with a deep connection to the Trinity community.

“We are excited to elevate Coach Burston into this role,” Lonon added. “His experience as a player and coach as well as his outstanding work over the past few years as our Student Life Coordinator positions him well to lead the program. Having an alum who lives our culture and values daily is an important step in continuing to move the program forward.”

“I am beyond elated and incredibly honored to be named the next Varsity Basketball Coach at my alma mater, Trinity Episcopal School. This is truly a dream come true,” said Burston. “Trinity helped shape me into who I am today, and the opportunity to now pour back into this program means more than I can put into words.”

Coach Burston inherits a roster that returns all starters from a year ago, a rare and advantageous transition made even more unique by his firsthand experience as a former Trinity player. About the opportunity, Burston added, “This is about building something special together with appreciation, enthusiasm, tenacity, and pride. It’s also about making sure our young men are well prepared for the real world.”

The school looks forward to the continued growth of the program under Burston’s leadership.
