Making Space

Trinity teachers take leadership roles in Virginia independent schools conference
Trinity was well represented at this year’s Leading Learning Conference hosted by the Virginia Association of Independent Schools (VAIS) in Short Pump. In addition to several teachers and administrators attending, the VAIS Professional Development Advisory Committee included both Mandy Augst, librarian, and Laurie Pierce, technology facilitator.

The theme of this year’s conference was "Making Space," and VAIS encouraged participants to consider “space in our busy lives, space in our classrooms, space in our professional endeavors — to grow, innovate, challenge and pursue our schools’ mission while honing our own professional growth.” Teachers from across the state collaborated, shared best practices and heard messages from industry thought leaders.

Mandy Augst presented on two topics: “Outside the Breakout Box: Adventures in Game-ification and Game-Based Learning” and “This Archive Will Go Down in History: Documenting Your School’s Past.” Augst will also be co-chairing next year’s conference.

“Making Space” reaffirmed for the Trinity attendees why independent schools in general, and Trinity in particular, are uniquely positioned to understand and adapt to an ever widening diversity of student backgrounds — and to teach character not just content.

Within the strategic plan "Honor the Mission," and through the school's identity as an IB World School, Trinity continues to find innovative ways to put students at the center of teaching and learning. IB Program Coordinator Marti Truman attended the conference and said: "It was affirming to recognize Trinity’s ongoing commitment to supporting best practices in instruction such as concept-based learning and transfer of skills and knowledge. This keeps our curriculum future-ready.”
