Michael Stratton ’02 Receives 2015 Faculty Discovery Award

Math teacher and outdoor enthusiast, Stratton will use grant for National Park tour
The Board of Trustees is pleased to present the 2015 Discovery Award to Michael Stratton ’02, teacher in the math, science and social studies departments and enthusiastic leader of the Trinity Outdoor Program.

A Trinity alum, Stratton came back to teach in 2008. Through his indefatigable work with students after school and on weekends, with outdoor adventures for both beginning and advanced students, Stratton has built the Trinity Outdoor Program (which includes kayaking, paddle-boarding, mountain biking, climbing and hiking) into an outdoor education program unrivaled among independent schools in Virginia.

In 2004, the Board of Trustees initiated the Discovery Award program as an appreciation for the passion and talents faculty bring to students each day. The Discovery Award is an extension of Trinity’s “Discover Your Path” motto, broadening the spectrum to encourage faculty members to expand their horizons and continue down their personal path of discovery.

Any faculty member wishing to participate is asked to write a narrative of what he/she would do with the $2,500 prize. In the past, faculty have become certified Wilderness First Responders, gone on a father-daughter dude ranch adventure in Wyoming, joined a cycling group through the Northeast, attended golf school in Vermont and attended an Olympic Training Center in Colorado, just to name a few.

“I first fell in love with the great outdoors when I was a student at Trinity, and it has been the greatest experience of my life to share my passion with the next generation,” Stratton writes. “This summer I would love to fuel the fire of my outdoor passion by doing a cross-country tour of our amazing National Parks.”

Equipped with his kayaks, mountain bikes, climbing gear, ice gear, kites, overnight packs and his running shoes, he will leave with a compass and a map and return with a storybook. By documenting much of his adventure with his Go-Pro camera and quadcopter drone, he plans to share this trip of a lifetime with the student body, the faculty and staff as well as the board. He concludes: “I will push our motto, ‘Discover Your Path,’ like it has never been pushed before!”

“On behalf of the Board of Trustees, our sincere congratulations are due to Mr. Stratton,” said Gayle Hargett, Trinity board member and chair of the governance committee. “This award is well-deserved and we sincerely appreciate all of the incredible talents he brings to Trinity.”
