Seniors in the IB Extended Essay program honored for achievement in independent research
The seniors in the IB Extended Essay program were honored for their achievement in Morning Meeting on Monday, May 24. Two copies of each essay will be published — one for the student and one for the school to keep on display for posterity.

The Extended Essay is a component of the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme. In no fewer than 4,000 words, students complete an independent, self-directed piece of research, akin to a college-level thesis.

“The Extended Essay is such a unique learning opportunity — one that is open to all Trinity students,” said Head of School Rob Short. “By doing original, independent research and sharing their published findings with the world, students learn to think and write creatively and critically. It is a rich process that prepares them so well for college and beyond.”

This year’s topics included:
  • The Weakest Link: The Impact of Demographic Issues on Chinese Global Hegemony
  • A Comparative Study of Urban Gardens and Rural Farms in Richmond and its Surrounding Counties
  • Virtuosic Composition Across Ages: Comparing Virtuosic Composition of Baroque Music and Heavy Metal
  • To what extent have American Media Corporations affected the growth of political polarization in the United States in the last 10 years?
  • An Exploration of the Effect of Portuguese Exploration and Trade in West Africa Through Art
  • The Investigation of Relationships Between the Earth’s Tilt, Varying Latitudes, and Photovoltaic Cells
  • An Exploration of the Depiction of Femininity in Beatrice Wood’s Pottery
  • What Difference Eighty Years Makes: A Critical Examination in the Method and Motives of the Writing of Upton Sinclair’s “Oil!” and Paul Thomas Anderson’s “There Will Be Blood”
