Winter College Signing Day

Three seniors are recognized in football
As the recruiting cycle ends for the 2021 class around the country, many seniors have made the final decision on where their home will be for the next four years. With a small crowd on hand in the Speight Alumni Room, three Trinity student athletes put pen to paper — signing their National Letter of Intent to play intercollegiate athletics at the Division I level.

  • Andrew Duhart ’21 (football) — United States Naval Academy
  • Max Cullen ’21 (football) — Virginia Military Institute
  • Walker Ferguson ’21 (football) — Wake Forest University
Sam Mickens, head football coach, shared his appreciation and excitement for this strong group of young men. Finishing a high school career without having a full football season due to a pandemic definitely wasn’t a part of the plan but their will, determination and understanding allowed them to be in this spot today. “Given everything that has happened, they are three of the toughest players that I’ve ever coached,” said Mickens. “They truly model excellence.”

Coach Mickens began to express his appreciation for Max Cullen’s hard work and loyalty to the football program throughout his time as a student athlete at Trinity. “I can’t say enough about your desire, your willingness to do anything for your coaches,” said Mickens. “VMI is getting an absolute steal.”

Mickens started to reflect on Andrew Duhart’s development, both mentally and physically, as a Titan. “A year ago, we thought he was a D-I cornerback, but he didn’t; and when he came back he knew he was a Division I cornerback,” said Mickens. “He’s gone from being a good high school football player to projecting as an extremely valuable college football player.”

Lastly, the coach raved about Walker Ferguson’s willingness to overcome all of the adversity faced in his high school career. Mickens also wanted everyone to know how much work Ferguson put in during the offseason to put himself in this position. “He put his head down, worked hard, and I’m so proud of you and all you’ve gone through to get here,” said Mickens. “Prove everyone wrong, and you can do that.”
