In Memoriam: Ray Nelson, Trinity's Second Head of School

Honoring the contributions of a global-minded educational leader
Dear Members of the Extended Trinity Community,

It is with sadness and a heavy heart that I share that The Rev. Raymond A. Nelson, Trinity Episcopal School’s second Head of School, died peacefully at home on the 4th of November at the age of 88. The family posted the obituary yesterday.

Reverend Nelson served Trinity for four years, from 1986 to 1990, bringing with him substantial experience as a head of school for 10 other independent schools across the country. My conversations with his wife Mimi over the last several weeks have centered on their fondness for Trinity. In an extensive professional career as an educational leader all over America and overseas, she said Trinity was a favorite school and he always felt at home in Virginia.

On a personal level, I am particularly grateful that he gave me my very first teaching job, right here at Trinity, in 1989. I remember Ray as a person who would share amazing quotes, who spoke multiple languages, loved thinking internationally, was thrilled when we became an IB World School, and believed in viewing all people as equals. As a leader, Ray was always willing to roll up his sleeves, whether it was coaching tennis or working on weekend campus projects with colleagues and students.

Our thoughts and prayers go out to the Nelson family in this time of loss. The family has asked that in lieu of flowers, gifts be made to Trinity’s Emily Huffman McLeod Scholarship Fund in his memory.

Respectfully,

Rob Short
Head of School
