Whiting ’20 Earns Lexus Nomination

Record-setting swimmer nominated for leadership award for athletic and academic excellence
Sydney Whiting ’20, an IB Diploma recipient and a captain of Trinity’s swimming program, is one of only 30 scholar athletes to receive a nomination for this year's Lexus of Richmond Leadership Award and $25,000 scholarship. For the past 25 years, Lexus of Richmond has recognized scholar athletes in the Richmond area for their leadership and success in the classroom, community and in their sport. Headed to Notre Dame in the fall, Whiting finished her career at Trinity as an All American both in the water and in the classroom.“She is not only a fast swimmer but a great teammate… and an integral part of keeping the team together,” says Tim Johnson, Trinity swimming head coach. “So while she certainly holds all these accolades, times and records, Notre Dame is getting a really great person, and those are few and far between.”

During her senior campaign, Sydney led the Girl’s Swim team to a 26-3 record, placing 3rd in LIS and 5th in VISAA. Whiting reeled in several individual accolades as she received All-LIS (50 Free, 100 Free), All-State (50 Free, 100 Free), LIS Co-Swimmer of the Year; VISAA Swimmer of the Year, All-American AA-B (50 Freestyle), All-American AA-A (100 Freestyle), and RTD Scholar-Athlete of the Month in February. Whiting accomplished all of this while maintaining a 4.7 GPA as a full IB student and serving as a leader for her teammates as well as in the Trinity community.

“Leadership is about leading by example. I’m not always the loudest person in the room but I believe my actions speak louder than words,” says Whiting, “I’ve worked hard to create an environment of support and passion.”

Whiting set many examples of what it means to be a Titan as she has organized many collaborative student events to help out in the community through RVA-based nonprofits. On Valentine’s Day she was able to team up with Doorways and deliver goodie bags to families with loved ones in the hospital. “We were able to deliver over 100 Valentine’s Day bags to families to make them feel more at home and appreciated during uncertain times,” Whiting said. Sydney is also a recipient of the West Point Leadership Award.

Whether it’s working hard in the classroom, setting new records in the water or making someone smile in the community, Sydney strives to be her best in all endeavors..

Lexus of Richmond will select the recipient of the $25,000 scholarship award in June.
