International Film Festival

Exploring cultural themes through cinema
In a classroom packed with students in every seat, the opening scenes of the French film, La Famille Belier played during Trinity’s tenth annual International Film Festival. Other students settled in to watch The Insult (Arabic) or The Farewell (Mandarin) during the first showing of the day. During the day-long festival, students can screen three to four films, enjoy free popcorn, and see short movies produced by Trinity’s cinematography students.

“The Film Festival's mission is to provide an opportunity for students to explore global, cultural and social themes through films from different countries,” said French teacher Julie Urena, “[these] films should offer our audience compelling, thought-provoking aspects of life that allow us to think outside of our own culture and to see the world in a different way.”

While the World Languages department faculty initially ran the festival, the event is now entirely student run. The International Film Festival club selects the films, staffs the screenings and promotes the event to their classmates.

“Our club does a great job finding movies that are relevant to our student body, which is why I like students to pick them,” said Urena. “Our discussions and justification for showing one film over another can be rather lively.”

The mission of Trinity’s World Language department is to cultivate inquisitive learners of language and culture in a diverse and changing world. Learn more at http://www.trinityes.org/worldlanguages.
