First Friday Speaker Series Returns

The Trinity mission states that students will “develop their talents,” but what does that really look like in practice?
During three “First Fridays Speaker Series” events this year, students will hear from classmates and faculty about how they have lived part of Trinity’s mission to “develop their talents.”

The opening First Friday Speaker Series featured Eudora Nordt ’20 and Molly Sanyour ’01.

Nordt spoke first about her experience with the on campus a capella group, the TriTones. “Joining a capella was a big step outside of my comfort zone, but I decided to take the risk and it paid off entirely,” she said. “Through a capella, I have learned to be confident in my singing, but also I discovered my passion for singing with a group of people who I know are always there to support me.”

She concluded her speech with encouragement for her classmates. “Every student here has a unique gift and there is no better environment than Trinity for you to explore and develop your potential.”

Following Nordt, Molly Sanyour shared her journey from student to Trinity’s beloved ceramics teacher and shared some stories about her days as a student. She even joked about speaking to the whole school again after losing her race for SGA president twenty years ago.

Sanyour confessed she never intended to study ceramics in college, and she definitely never intended on teaching at her alma mater. “Why would I go back to my high school?” Sanyour said, “but my sister said, ‘it’s your dream job. It’s a ceramics teaching job. You have to at least apply. You might not even get it.’ So I applied, and here I am five years later.”

Sanyour then called out a few students by name whose talents she has seen grown from their first art class to now. “Everyone is an artist,” she said. “You all have no experience and in a couple of weeks you are all creating things.”

“You all are so lucky to be Trinity students. You all have so many opportunities,” Sanyour said as she closed first Speaker Series. “Get involved. Run for student office. Even if you don’t get it, it makes your a better person.”
