Spring Signing Day

Two football players make their commitments official for NCAA competition
Parents, family, faculty, coaches and students gathered in the Estes Athletic Center on the morning of Thursday, April 18 to celebrate two Trinity seniors as they officially commit to competing in intercollegiate athletics next year. Late April is a traditional time for seniors to sign their national letters of intent, and Trinity seniors joined student-athletes nationwide this week with this signing ceremony.

“It’s always a special day when we get to see students that get the opportunity to play at the next level," said Athletic Director Becky Currier, as she welcomed guests and introduced Sam Mickens, head coach of the varsity football team to speak about the two seniors.

"I’ll be forever grateful for this group of seniors for all they put into this program,” said Mickens. “For years to come, any success we have in the future, we can point back to this senior class."

Patrick Way ’19 is headed to Randolph-Macon College to play football next year. “Yes, he’s a great athlete… yes, he has a 30-plus-inch vertical leap... yes he can run a 4.5 40... that’s all great,” said Micken, “but the reason he is going to Randolph-Macon is his character. He's going to do all the things that you ask of him and make Trinity proud. He is leaving our school and our program a better place because he was here.”

Reed Powell ’19 will play football at the University of Richmond. Mickens called him a “throwback player,” known for his “gritty, hard-nosed” defense over the four years he played for the Titans. “From day one had an immediate impact on the field,” said Mickens. “He’s one of the best defensive players to ever play at Trinity… UR is getting a player who will work hard and compete with everything he’s got.”

Powell and Way join 13 other Trinity seniors from the class of 2019 set to compete at the intercollegiate level next year.
