A Sweet Partnership

Students kickoff community engagement partnerships with on-campus service event for Sportable
A group of sophomores volunteered their Friday-morning Discovery Period to stuff treat bags for Sportable’s annual “RVA Tailgate” community event on September 22. Sportable is a non-profit that strives to “transform the lives of people with physical and visual disabilities through sport.”

The student volunteers enjoyed what will be only the first in a series of long-term community service opportunities with Sportable, after the 10th grade voted the local nonprofit as their official community partner for the school year.

“We’re a very athletic class, and so people can relate to wanting to play sports,” said Annie Nash ’21, 10th grade class secretary. “It’s really inspiring to see people with disabilities be able to follow their dreams and play the sports that they want to. We are going to be volunteering and helping out with the wheelchair basketball events.”

With "Community Engagement" established as a major theme of the school's five-year strategic plan (Honor the Mission), each grade level has committed to year-long partnership with a local non-profit for targeted service and support. Trinity students will support each organization with volunteer events on campus as well as on-site at their organization.

Grade-Level Community Partners (2018-19):
“We are excited to launch these partnerships and share our Titan spirit in supporting these fantastic organizations,” said Laura Hamlin Weiler ’00, Trinity’s head of community engagement, a new position created this year. “We want students to make a strong, meaningful connection with a local organization and, in turn, educate the Trinity community (and beyond) about the importance of each of our community partners.”

Next week, the freshmen class will have their first event supporting The Doorways, while the junior class will take its first outing to Shalom Farms.
