Bacon, Boyd and Singleton Commit on National Signing Day

Three seniors sign to play D1 athletics next year.
On February 7, three seniors signed national letters of intent to continue their athletic careers at the collegiate level. Sam Bacon, Tink Boyd and Foster Singleton join 11 other members of the class of 2018 to commit to playing intercollegiate athletics after Trinity.

Bacon will attend Elon University to continue playing soccer; Boyd will walk on at Virginia Tech to play football; and Singleton will continue playing football at the University of Richmond.

The three were celebrated in front of a crowd of peers and parents in the Estes Athletic Center as their coaches commended each of them for their character, determination and spirit.

Head varsity boys soccer coach Brian Phillips spoke first about Bacon. Phillips explained that turnovers in soccer are incredibly hard to avoid, but Bacon played four indoor games in a row without a single turnover. “That is an incredible testament to his ability in his chosen sport and why he’s advancing to the next level,” said Phillips.

Bacon will also be playing with the Richmond Kickers professional team in the 2018 season. “If you want to talk about a person who represents our school in every facet, you are looking at this person right here,” said Phillips. “[Sam is] a member of the honor council, an incredible athlete, willing to help out folks, an IB student.”

Head varsity football coach Sam Mickens spoke about Foster Singleton and his adaptability as a lineman. “We are so excited for him…offensive and defensive linemen really don’t get the accolades that they deserve,” Mickens said. “It’s really hard to put a tangible amount on what a lineman does on a day-to-day basis.” Praising Singleton’s leadership, Mickens said, “[Foster] is a young man that stands on his character.”

After a round of applause, Mickens spoke about receiver Tink Boyd, noting that he first coached Boyd in a Little League all-star game. “When Tink came in, he was so great for our community. It was just the perfect fit from day one,” Mickens said. “As we started to get into the program, we started to see little things where we thought ‘hey this kid could be really special.’” Mickens also stated how proud he is of Boyd as an athlete and as a person, and of all that he has managed to accomplish in his time as Titan.

Mickens rounded out his speech by noting how both departing football players have left big shoes to fill and a legacy to inspire their younger teammates.

As of today, fourteen athletes will represent Trinity in seven sports at eleven different schools next year.
