Student Artists Earn Regional Recognition

Nine Titans recognized for exceptional artwork by Scholastic Art Awards
Nine Trinity artists have been recognized in the annual Scholastic Art and Writing Awards, described as “the nation's longest-running, most prestigious educational initiative supporting student achievement in the visual and literary arts.”

“Submissions are juried by luminaries in the visual and literary arts, some of whom are past award recipients,” reads the official award description. “Panelists look for works that best exemplify originality, technical skill, and the emergence of a personal voice or vision.” Recognizing exceptional artwork by students in grades 7–12 throughout the U.S., Scholastic provides the largest source of creativity-based scholarships for middle and high school students.

This year, Angel Burgos represents Trinity as a Gold Key honoree, making her eligible for national recognition by a panel of creative–industry experts. Her submission, “Tremaine The Playboy,” is a spray-paint piece inspired by the smooth lines and color schemes of contemporary graphic artist Shepard Fairey.

Along with the work of other talented local student artists, the Trinity honorees’ art will be displayed at the Visual Arts Center of Richmond from February 17-25, 2018.

“The arts at Trinity rise from a firm foundation,” said Meredith Turner, visual art teacher. “From the facilities to way that we build skills and confidence in introductory courses and then encourage [them] to explore unique paths as they move through the advanced and IB classes. We strive to build the students' ability to ask of themselves, ‘What is it I am trying to say, what forces have influenced that statement, and how do my formal choices create that emotive outcome?’ All of this lends to the success and recognition from outside sources like Scholastic.”

In 2017, Lauren DeRocco ’17 was honored with a National Gold Key for her photograph, “Wonderland.”

The Trinity visual arts curriculum includes photography, painting, drawing, ceramics, mixed media and much more. Course levels are designed to meet the needs of beginning students through IB art certificate students. Trinity’s 4,000-plus square-foot visual arts center brings together artists, painters and sculptors in a spectacular collaborative space. Learn more at trinityes.org/arts.
