Health Screening Policy Update and Ways to Maintain Healthy Community this Fall

Health Screenings
We are updating our health screening policy through RUVNA to include everyone, every weekday (on or off campus, faculty, staff or student). This daily record ensures that when or if you choose to come to campus you will be permitted to do so. Screen daily. RUVNA messages go out every weekday as a record to measure symptoms and keep us safe.

If your child has symptoms of COVID-19
  • Reach out to your primary health care provider, stay home, and notify the school nurse, Suzanne Winefordner at 804-672-4956.
  • Consult the  VDH flow chart for evaluating symptoms for an overview of next steps. This chart will be revised and improved the week of September 21.
If your student or a household member has a tested positive, you are waiting for a test, or  have a known close contact:
  • Notify the school nurse, Suzanne Winefordner 804-672-4956

Ways you can help
If it is not part of your annual preventative health routine, please consider a flu shot for your child this fall. This winter will be challenging for symptom identification. If we can reduce the incidents of flu this year, we can reduce the need for quarantine and COVID testing. Please observe our sick policy rigorously. The Virginia Department of Health has stressed that organizations who do not rigorously separate symptomatic individuals will encourage cluster infections of COVID-19 which will quickly increase.

Consider downloading the Covidwise app. This contact tracing app can help the school and the health department reduce the uncertainty surrounding exposure.

We realize that both the flu shot and Covidwise are family decisions, however if a significant proportion of our community participates, the community will be better prepared to meet the challenges of the fall and winter. Community participation means more accurate contact tracing and better safety for everyone.

Making Decisions about Travel and Social Activities
Our campus safety measures allow us to control the spread of COVID-19 on campus to a high degree through social distancing, rigorous cleaning, and mask wearing. You can do your part off campus by doing the following:

Please consider your travel and social decisions with extreme care by asking yourself these three questions.
  1. Are social distancing guidelines relaxed or absent at the event/location I am visiting?
  2. Will my child be exposed to others outside of their existing family and friend group bubble?
  3. Is the area in question a hotspot?

If your answer to any of these questions is yes, then reconsider your plans or self-quarantine upon return. Your choice on where to go and what to do after school hours on the weekends and holidays affect us all.

Read and follow these guidelines from the Virginia Department of Health surrounding travel and best practices.

If you are considering travel or group activities and would like to ask questions, you may contact Robin Dudding, Attendance and Front Desk Manager, or Chris McQueeney, Campus Coordinator, to answer questions and inform your decision.

Weekly Health Report
We will be publishing a weekly report of current positive cases among students and/or faculty/staff as well as individuals in quarantine. Currently, we have no positive students, faculty, or staff.. You may recall that one community member tested positive earlier this month; that individual is now negative and able to return to campus. Our numbers are good. However, we know that numbers will shift throughout the year and parents will want to understand the inevitable infection rates that will occur. A simple chart will be shared by email each Tuesday to keep everyone informed of the current community status.
