IB Geography Syllabus
Instructor: Mr. Rick Hamlin, E-7
Materials: Geography: An Integrated Approach, David Waugh
-One spiral notebook
Test Days: All tests will be on Tuesday and Friday
Grading: Each article and chapter question will be graded out of 100 points. Articles will be presented orally each Monday. They should be a current events article which is relevant to geography. Students receive 70 points for turning the article in on time, and the student will receive a score out of 10 possible points on 3 criteria. The criteria will be: a summary of the article, the relevance of the article, and they are to ask and answer a question that might appear on the IB exam based on their article. All articles will be compiled in a class notebook. Questions from the textbook will be graded based on the number of marks that the question specifies. Questions will be assigned in pairs with each student working with a partner. Tests will be graded out of 100 and will count 3 times in the averaging of the final grade. Class participation will make up 10 % of the final grade.
Course Content: The content of the course will be based on the themes set forth by the International Baccalaureate Organization. These themes include: population, resources, and development which are the core themes. We will study at least 4 of the additional themes of: drainage basins, coasts, arid environments, lithospheric processes and hazards, ecosystems and human activity, climatic hazard and change, contemporary issues in geographical regions, settlements, globalization, and topographic mapping.
Skill Content: The skills which will be introduced and developed in IB Geography include: locate and differentiate elements of the Earth's surface, read, interpret, analyze and produce maps and graphs, undertake geographical investigation, manipulate and interpret data using quantitative techniques, and produce written material.
IB Exam: The course will be taught over 3 semesters culminating with the examination in May of the senior year. Every action in the course is designed with the preparation for that exam in mind. We will be working together as a class to produce the best possible scores on the IB exam.

2008 Match Reports
March 18 at Steward (5-1)
The Titans got the 2008 season off to a great start scoring only 12
seconds in to the match. Courtney Frayser ('08) assisted Jordan Brown
('09). The first 10 minutes saw numerous opportunities for the Titans
to put the game away, but Steward hung tough. Midway through the first
half, Steward tied the match against the run of play. Six minutes
later, Trinity responded with a goal from Mary Virginia Long ('11) off
an assist from Brown. The Titans took a 3-1 lead into halftime after
Courtney Camden ('09) scored directly off of a corner kick. With 30
minutes left in the game, Trinity scored their 4th goal with Jordan
Brown putting away a shot off of a beautiful touch by Megan Culbertson
('08). Brown returned the favor assisting Culbertson about 5 minutes
later. The last 24 minutes saw no goals despite numerous opportunities
for the Titans with the wind at their back. Other strong games were
provided by Lee Lee Watkins ('10) and Jordan King ('10). All 5 goals
were scored by players who are new to the school this year, playing in
their first game in a Titan uniform. The girls travel to play
Goochland on Thursday.
March 20 at Goochland (3-1)
Trinity defeated Goochland 3-1 at GHS for the first time in 4 years.
Trinity got off to another quick start with a goal from Jordan Brown
('09) in the second minute. The Titans, playing the first half with a
stiff wind at their backs added 2 more goals; from Courtney Camden
('09), and Megan Culbertson ('08). Brown assisted the second as
Trinity essentially dominated with the aid of the wind. The second
half proved to be a different story. Goochland used the wind to create
numerous opportunities, but the Titans defense hung tough. Key defense
was provided by: Desiree Tunnell ('08), Joanna Bolstad ('08), Sarah
Sheppard ('09), and Caitlin Sarlo ('08). Annie Laurie McDonald ('08)
played well as usual in her backyard of Goochland, and Culbertson
dropped back to defense for the final 20 minutes and effectively marked
a very dangerous Bulldogs player. Jessica Addison ('11) made some huge
saves in nets, and the Titans held Goochland off until long-time
Goochland star Amy Zickafoose connected on a beautiful shot with 5
minutes left. By that point most of the Trinity starters were enjoying
a well-deserved rest. Next game is the LIS opener against St.
Catherine's.
Player of the game: Jessica Addison ('11)
March 27 St. Catherine's (2-0)
The Titans and Saints
played their typical hard-fought match, and the result was a Trinity
win by a score of 2-0. On a beautiful March day at TES, the Titans
started our home opener a bit sluggish. The players showed some signs
of nerve against our fierce rival. Neither team really threatened in
the first 20 minutes as the squads got a feel for the game. Just past
the halfway point of the first half, Trinity struck when Sarah Sheppard
('09) played a perfect ball over the top of the Saints defense to a
streaking Megan Culbertson ('08). Culbertson calmly finished her
opportunity to put Trinity ahead. The first half saw both teams
struggle to connect passes, but the Saints won more than their fair
share of 50/50 balls. At halftime, the Trinity players decided that
they needed to be more aggressive in getting to loose balls, and they
did a better job in the 2nd half. The Titans got a 2nd goal at the
midway point of half number 2 . Courtney Camden's ('09) corner kick
was cleared just outside the box by the Saints, but Elizabeth Robertson
('08) played the ball back into the mix in front of the net. Courtney
Frayser ('08) got a foot on the ball, and Mary Virginia Long ('11)
blasted the loose ball into the back of the net. In the final quarter
of the match, the Saints went to a more offensive alignment, but
Trinity marked well; preventing St. Catherine's from getting many good
looks at goal. Goalie Jessica Addison ('11) took control of the box,
and Trinity's defense did their part. Desiree Tunnell ('08), Kelsey
Herbert ('08), Caitlin Sarlo ('08), Sarah Sheppard ('09) and Annie
Laurie McDonald ('08) were nearly flawless in the back over the last 15
minutes. In particular, Tunnell played a crucial role in organizing
the defense, and she was the only Titan field player to log all 80
minutes. The win brings Trinity's record to 3-0 with a week to prepare
for St. Gertrude, and then the busiest stretch of the season.
Player of the game: Desiree Tunnell ('08)
April 3: St. Gertrude (2-2)
The Gators and Titans played an absolute cracker of a game on a really
wet, really cold evening at Trinity. After 80 minutes of regulation,
and 20 minutes of overtime the match ended in a 2-2 draw. Both sides
had many chances, and it proved to be a fair result from an extremely
competitive match. Trinity struck for a first half goal when Charlsey
Kaufman ('08) crushed a left-footed shot from outside the box into the
corner of the net. The Titans took a 1-0 lead into halftime, but the
Gators of St. Gertrude came out fired up in the second half. With 25
minutes left, St. Gertrude tied the game with a beautifully headed ball
off of a setpiece. With 16 minutes left, Trinity retook the lead on a
goal from Megan Culbertson ('08) which was assisted by Kaufman. It
seemed that the Titans had the momentum to take the victory, but after
a handball about 27 yards from goal, the Gators put in a freekick
towards the net. In the wet conditions, the ball slipped through
Goalkeeper Jessica Addison's ('11) hands. Addison had a great game,
and she came out of her net to make many great plays, but she was
disappointed to give up the tying goal. As darkness fell upon the
soaked field, at least 4 Trinity players had to fight through cramps to
stay in the match. The 20 minute overtime saw both sides have a few
chances, and the Gators had the best chance. Addison dove to knock out
a cross that the Gators rebounded, but put just outside the goal.
Every Trinity player that played on the wet, cold pitch gave their best
effort, and it would be hard to single out just a few players for their
efforts. Mary Virginia Long ('11) was tenacious in the midfield
playing with passion and pride. Desiree Tunnell ('08) provided
incredible leadership and toughness in the back, playing through a
great deal of pain. Courtney Camden ('09) owned the center of the park
for long stretches of the match, and she ultimately played all over the
field. Other gutty performances were turned in by: Sarah Sheppard
('09), Allie Goldstein ('09), Elizabeth Robertson ('08), Courtney
Frayser ('08), and Caitlin Sarlo ('08).
Players of the game: Charlsey Kaufman ('08) and Desiree Tunnell ('08)
April 4 Highland at VES Tournament (0-0)
Less than 24
hours after their incredibly intense game against league rival St.
Gertrude, the Trinity Titans faced the talented and experienced
Highland Hawks. With a 2 and a half hour bus trip to get to VES, and
tired legs from the night before, there was plenty of reason for TES to
worry. Especially considering that Highland had won the past 2
Division 2 state tournaments, and they had lost only 1 game since 2005,
and Highland destroyed Trinity 8-0 last year in the same event.
Despite the deck seemingly being stacked against them, Trinity
responded with a phenomenal effort to gain a 0-0 draw to start the
tournament. The first 10 minutes were shaky, and the Hawks had
numerous chances. Jessica Addison ('11) came up big in nets, to keep
the Titans in the game. But once Trinity settled in, the Titans did a
phenomenal job marking Highland's dangerous players, staying very
organized in the process. With 12 minutes left in the first half,
Addison saved a penalty kick to keep the score even. The second half
saw Trinity soak up constant pressure from Highland, but also produce a
couple of good chances of their own on counter attacks. Addison made a
couple more impressive saves, and Sarah Sheppard ('09) did a tremendous
job of containing Highland's talented star senior Emily Dale. Unlike
Thursday's game when the Titans substituted very little, every Trinity
player played in the match. Sage Timberline ('11) played significant
minutes in her varsity debut, and she more than held her own. When
Desiree Tunnell's ('08) quad stiffness cropped up again, Courtney
Camden ('09) dropped from her midfield position to play wonderfully in
the back. After 80 hard-fought minutes, Trinity went to overtime for
the second consecutive day. The overtime lasted 10 minutes and still
no one had scored. Because it was a tournament, the two sides went to
a penalty kick shootout. Highland's first 2 shooters converted, but so
too did Courtney Camden ('09) and Megan Culbertson ('08) for the
Titans. When the Hawks goalie saved 2 shots after Highland only missed
1, the match was officially over. It was another hard-fought draw, but
for the purposes of the tournament, the Hawks were winners by virtue of
the shootout.
Players of the game: Jessica Addison ('11) and Sarah Sheppard ('09)
April 5 VES at VES Tournament (0-2)
The fatigue of playing intense, overtime matches the previous 2 days
caught up with Trinity in a 0-2 loss to host Virginia Episcopal. VES
dominated the first 20 minutes as the Titans tried to wake up for the
early morning match. A change in alignment changed the momentum in
Trinity's favor. In the latter part of the second half, the Titans
created numerous opportunities, but failed to connect on any goals.
Trinity had to feel good about going into the half tied up after such a
sluggish start, but the second half provided frustration and heartache
for the previously unbeaten Titans. With 25 minutes remaining, VES
scored on an own-goal off of a Titan defender. The Trinity backline
seemed confused, and unproductive finger-pointing ensued. Trinity
captain and defensive leader Desiree Tunnell ('08) who courageously
plays with a chronic quad injury had to come out of the match, the pain
too much to bear. This hurt the defense's organization, and about 5
minutes later, VES blasted a 30 yard shot that came off of another
Trinity defender, putting the Bishops ahead 2-0. Trinity created
numerous opportunities in the next 10 minutes putting 4 shots just wide
(including 2 by Megan Culbertson ('08) which hit the outside netting of
the goal). While all the Titans questions on offense went unanswered,
the Bishops energy level pulled them through on their home field. One
bright spot for the Titans was the defensive play of substitute Annie
Laurie McDonald ('08). The Titans could not lick their wounds for long
as the 4th game in 3 days was just 3 hours in front of them.
Player of the game: Annie Laurie McDonald ('08)
April 5 New Covenant at VES Tournament (4-0)
The tired Titans started very slowly, but dug deep to gain a 4-0 win
over New Covenant. With starters Megan Culbertson ('08), Courtney
Camden ('09), Charlsey Kaufman ('08), and Desiree Tunnell ('08) being
held out of the starting lineup, the Titan reserves got a chance to
show their stuff. The first half saw Trinity create most of the
scoring chances, but fail to find the back of the net. Ashton Herbert
('08), Kathleen Watkins ('08), and Mary Virginia Long ('11) proved
productive for Trinity while the rest of the team frankly struggled
against the young, but scrappy New Covenant side. At halftime,
Culbertson and Camden were inserted into the lineup for the first time,
and the substitutions provided immediate dividends. Trinity took the
second half kickoff, and connected 5 passes, the last of which was
Kaufman to Culbertson for a goal. It took all of 10 seconds of the
second half for Trinity to pull ahead. Just 2 minutes later,
Culbertson assisted Long for the Titans second goal. Camden assisted
Culbertson for the 3rd goal, and then Courtney Camden got herself on
the scoreboard to put Trinity up 4-0 with about 15 minutes left.
Numerous starters got a much needed rest for the remainder of the
game. Everyone played well in the second half to end the roadtrip on a
positive note.
Player of the game: Megan Culbertson ('08)
April 8 at Richmond Christian (2-1)
Trinity got a difficult win over Richmond Christian
2-1 on the Warriors narrow pitch. The game started terribly for the
Titans as RCS scored a second minute goal off of a setpiece. The kick
hit a striding midfielder who had escaped her mark, and she put it into
the far corner. The goal served as a punch in the face to the Titans
who struggled for about the first 15 minutes before finally waking up.
At that point, Sarah Sheppard ('09) played a perfect ball to Courtney
Camden ('09) who fought through a tackle to gain a shot that found the
back of the net. Right before the half, Trinity got another break as a
speedy Warriors forward broke through and hit the crossbar. After the
half, Trinity picked up their energy level and quickly pressed down the
field. After earning a corner, Camden found the head of Megan
Culbertson ('08) for what proved to be the winning goal in the 41st
minute. Soon after the goal, Kathleen Watkins ('08) created a great
chance for Camden that she uncharacteristically missed. Watkins
connected a number of probing passes, and provided great energy up
front for Trinity. As the second half progressed the match got very
physical. In the final 5 minutes, Richmond Christian was awarded a
penalty kick. It appeared that the Warriors would tie the match, but
Jessica Addison ('11) dove to brilliantly save the penalty and preserve
the win. The win brought Trinity's record to 5-1-2 with another match
tomorrow vs. Steward.
Player of the game: Kathleen Watkins ('08)
April 9 Steward (4-0)
Trinity won their 3rd straight
game with a 4-0 home victory over Steward. Unlike the first meeting
between the teams when Jordan Brown ('09) scored just seconds into the
game, it took the Titans awhile to scratch. Brown has been out since
the season's second game after knee surgery, and her return is
questionable. On this day it took Trinity 12 minutes and 7 shots
before Megan Culbertson ('08) collected a short goal kick for an
unassisted goal. Just minutes later, Courtney Camden ('09) hit a
perfect corner kick that Culbertson tucked away for a 2-0 lead. Prior
to the half, Sarah Sheppard ('09) made an amazing pass at the top of
the box that Charlsey Kaufman ('08) converted into her second goal of
the season. At halftime, the Titans had 14 shots to the Spartans 2.
Trinity continued to create opportunities in the second half, but some
poor shooting coupled with some nice saves by the Steward keeper
limited Trinity to only 1 second half goal on 17 shots. That goal was
Megan Culbertson's third of the day, and was assisted by fellow senior
and former youth teammate Charlsey Kaufman. Kaufman played Culbertson
a perfectly wighted pass down the left hand side of the pitch which
Culbertson calmly advanced and slotted in the back of the net for her
hattrick. Two of the Titans most reliable (and youthful) starters sat
this game out. Mary Virginia Long ('11) rested a gimpy hamstring, and
Keeper Jessica Addison ('11) suffered a wrist injury about 10 minutes
before the game while warming up. Along with the two freshmen and
Brown, other Titans who missed this game were: Ashton Herbert ('08)
with an ankle problem, Lee Lee Watkins ('10) (stomach), and Jordan King
('10) (migraine). Anna Queen ('09) and Christine Archuleta ('09) are
out for the season with knee injuries. While the injury bug has not
been as vicious as last year's devastating health problems, it left the
Titans with just a few subs today. The good news was that everyone in
uniform got to play a lot. Fortunately, Kathleen Watkins ('08) steeped
into the nets for a shutout. Other players who has strong performances
were: Katie Markunas ('09), Ryan Brizzolara ('08), and Allie Goldstein
('09). Another Titan who shined for the 4th straight game was Annie
Laurie McDonald ('08). She dominated in the center of the defense
winning numerous 50/50 balls, and playing some well-placed long balls
to the front line. Trinity travels to Christchurch on Friday to take
on the CCS Seahorses, a team that crushed Trinity last season.
Player of the game: Annie Laurie McDonald ('08)
April 11 at Christchurch (1-1)
Trinity traveled to Christchurch School's beautiful field on the banks
of the Rappahannock River and gained a hard fought 1-1 draw against the
Seahorses. Trinity played the match without a number of injured or ill
players including: Desiree Tunnell ('08), Joanna Bolstad ('08), Ashton
Herbert ('08), Lee Lee Watkins ('10), and Jordan King ('10). In
addition, Mary Virginia Long ('11), Jessica Addison ('11), Elizabeth
Robertson ('08), and Megan Culbertson ('08) were playing through
nagging injuries. The short-handed Titans battled hard on what was
probably the warmest day of 2008 thus far. Trinity did less
substituting than normal, but everyone who played played well to
contribute to the result. The early part of the game saw the Titans
take awhile to get acclimated to the match. While CCS dominated
possession, Trinity prevented CCS from getting any shots on goal. In
the 15th minute, Christchurch was awarded a free kick about 30 yards
from goal on the left side of the field. The Seahorse player struck a
beautiful shot over the wall, and into the upper corner of the net.
While it was unfortunate for Trinity to be behind on the scoreboard,
the goal seemed to energize the Titans. Trinity began to win their
share of 50/50 balls and connect some passes to create a few scoring
opportunities. The Titans broke through just before half as Sarah
Sheppard ('09) won a ball near midfield which she was able to advance
to Charlsey Kaufman ('08). Kaufman sent a perfect ball up the left-hand
side of the pitch to Megan Culbertson ('08). Culbertson collected the
pass, blew past a defender and put a shot past the keeper into the
corner. This made the halftime score 1-1. The second half was very
even with both teams creating a few scoring chances. Kelsey Herbert
('08) saved a ball off the goal line to prevent CCS from scoring.
Trinity put a few shots right at the goalie, or just wide. Play got
very physical in the second half, and the referee had to show a card to
one Seahorse player to try to maintain control. Ultimately the match
ended in a draw which was a fair result. Trinity
had 13 shots, and Christchurch had 11. In light of the fact that
Christchurch beat Trinity 6-1 in Richmond last season, the Titans felt
good about the result. Stars of the match for Trinity included: Kaufman
(effort, passing), Ryan Brizzolara ('08) (played very aggressively),
Caitlin Sarlo ('08) (great tackles), Mary Virginia Long ('11) for her
excellent marking on CCS' #2 (a player who terrorized the Titans last
season), and Courtney Camden ('09) (who was pressed into service at
sweeper in the absence of starter Desiree Tunnell).
Player of the game: Courtney Camden ('09)
April 15 at St. Catherine's (1-0)
Trinity completed a season sweep of St. Catherine's with a 1-0 win at
St.Catherine's. The win brought the Titans record to 7-1-3 overall,
and 2-0-1 in the LIS. The game started well for Trinity with numerous
shots, and a lot of energy. The Titans were rewarded about 20 minutes
into the game when Courtney Camden ('09) blasted a terrific shot from
outside the 18 yard box on an assist from Annie Laurie McDonald ('08).
The goal seemed to energize the Saints who begin to win the majority of
50/50 balls. Trinity lost its' organization for a spell which was
disappointing as that has been a team strength all season. Halftime
provided a chance for the Titans to regroup and re-energize. Like the
first half, the Titans came out in the second with a grip on the game.
Trinity had a couple of breakaway chances that they failed to convert.
The Titans also had a series of 4 corner kicks in quick succession, a
couple of which provided scoring opportunities, but none of which were
converted. The last 10 minutes, St. Catherine's once again took the
game to Trinity. The Saints dominated the 50/50 balls and created a
few dangerous chances. Keeper Jessica Addison ('11) was pressed into
service more in the last 10 minutes then she had been in the first 70.
The defense of Mary Virginia Long ('11), Allie Goldstein ('09), Kelsey
Herbert ('08), Caitlin Sarlo ('08), and Courtney Camden ('09) held
strong. Midfielder Lee Lee Watkins ('10) also provided good energy and
aggression down the stretch of the match. Sarlo, Goldstein, and Long
in particular covered a lot of ground, and played with great
aggression. Overall, it was not the most aesthetically pleasing game
of the season, but Trinity was again able to grind out a positive
result.

April 17 Atlantic Shores (1-2)
Trinity suffered its' first home loss of the season in heartbreaking fashion by
a score of 2-1 to Atlantic Shores. Atlantic Shores came into the game with
terrific credentials. They were 10-0, ranked #2 in the state in Division 2, and
had outscored their opponents by a margin of 49-2. Despite their quality, the
Titans hung with the Seahawks, and grabbed a 1-0 lead on a penalty kick from
Courtney Camden ('09) in the first half. Playing with good energy, Trinity had
a good grasp on the match. The second half was physical and exciting, and both
teams attacked and looked to score. In the 58th minute, ASCS got on the board
thanks to a penalty kick of their own. About 7 minutes later, the Seahawks took
the lead on a beautifully struck free kick. Trinity attacked with ferocious
intensity for the final 10 minutes, but ASCS stayed solid to preserve the win.
Trinity got great offensive contributions from Jordan King ('10) (playing for
the first time in weeks) who troubled ASCS with her pace, and Coutrney Frayser
('08) who played with great aggressiveness. The middle of the park was manned
by Camden, Caitlin Sarlo ('08), and Sarah Sheppard ('09) who did well to slow
down the potent ASCS attack. The final result was a difficult one to swallow,
particularly because both Seahawk goals came off of referee's decisions. That
said, it was an exciting and memorable game on a lovely spring day at TES.

April 18 at St.Gertude (2-0)
For the first time since beginning spring soccer, Trinity defeated
St.Gertrude. The Titans showed incredible toughness and perseverance
to grind out a 2-0 victory on a hot spring afternoon at St.Joseph's
Villa. These two teams had an intense draw about 2 weeks earlier on a
day that was at least 40 degrees cooler than this day. The Titans
looked shaky in the first 10 minutes and were lucky not to be down a
goal after being saved by the crossbar. After the initial nervousness
wore off Trinity played well, and the match took on a good flow. Five
minutes before halftime, Trinity drew first blood. Allie Goldstein
('09) played a perfect ball to Megan Culbertson's ('08) feet.
Culbertson then sprinted past the Gators defense and finished the run
with a perfect shot past the diving keeper. Halftime provided a much
needed rest on the steamy pitch. St. Gertrude stepped up their
intensity and pace to begin the second half. Trinity goalkeeper
Jessica Addison ('11) made a few good saves, and she did well to
control the box. The entire Titan 11 was pressed into a defensive role
as the Gators came forward in numbers. Wing midfielders Charlsey
Kaufman ('08) and Mary Virginia Long ('11) played with toughness and
pace to aid the defense. Other key defensive contributions came from:
Caitlin Sarlo ('08), Allie Goldstein ('09), Sarah Sheppard ('09),
Joanna Bolstad ('08), Annie Laurie McDonald ('08), and Courtney Camden
('09). As usual, Desiree Tunnell ('08) served as the rock of the
defense from her sweeper position. With 18 minutes to go, Trinity put
in the second goal as Culbertson made another run through the Gator
defense, and this time fired a blast from 30 yards out over the
outstretched arms of St.Gertrude's goalie. The goal energized Trinity
as they could smell victory. The final whistle brought ecstasy to
Trinity as the Titans finally knocked of their rivals from St. Gertrude
(the 8th ranked team in the state in Division 1). The win moves
Trinity to 3-0-1 in the LIS with 2 league games remaining (both against
Collegiate).

April 23 at Collegiate (0-5)
Trinity suffered its' first league loss of the season by a 5-0 score to
local power Collegiate. The Titans started well, and played toe-to-toe
with the Cougars for the first 10 minutes. As the match progressed,
Collegiate's quick passing, and constant movement took a toll. It was
still 0-0 at the 30 minute mark, but when the Cougars struck, they did
so with killer instinct. Three first half goals were scored in a 2
minute period when the Titans lost the confidence and organization that
had taken them to such a great start to the season. Like a shark,
Collegiate smelled blood in the water and capitalized on Trinity's
mistakes. The second half opened the way the first half ended, as the
Cougars put up a 4th goal less than a minute into the 2nd half.
Trinity essentially held their own, and even created a few scoring
chances as the game progressed, but Trinity had to bring their "A" game
to have a chance, and that simply did not happen. Some Trinity
standouts included: Caitlin Sarlo ('08) (great tackles and defense),
Charlsey Kaufman ('08) (covered tons of ground in the midfield), Lee
Lee Watkins ('10) (strong defensive effort), and Ryan Brizzolara ('08)
(aggressive play and good passing). Trinity hopes to give a better
overall performance as they see the Cougars again in two days time.
Player of the game: Ryan Brizzolara ('08)
April 25 Collegiate (0-4)
The Titans of Trinity went up against LIS power Collegiate for the
second time in 3 days, and while the final result was the same
Trinity's effort was much better the second time around. Trinity
executed its' game plan which revolved around containing the Cougars'
most dangerous players. While the game plan worked well, the Cougars
just had too much finishing ability, and they came away with a 4-0
victory. Collegiate's first goal came 15 minutes in when a
miscommunication prevented the Titans from clearing the ball after a
goal kick. Collegiate's #2 used a great individual effort to force
through Trinity's last defender, and then finish with a perfect shot.
Unlike Wednesday's game, the Titans did not fold after falling behind.
In fact, the game's next scoring opportunity belonged to Trinity when
Megan Culbertson ('08) got to the endline and played a ball back across
to Charlsey Kaufman ('08) at the penalty spot. Kaufman got off a good
shot that the Cougars goalie did well to save. With the Titans less
than 2 minutes away from getting to the half down 0-1, Collegiate once
again barely beat Trinity's offside trap for a second goal. It was
eerily reminiscent of the Cougars second goal in Wednesday's game.
About 12 minutes into the second half, Collegiate got the back-breaking
third goal of the match when UVA-bound star Molly McKeon dribbled by 2
Titan defenders and put away a right footed shot. Mary Virginia Long
('11) had done well to contain McKeon all day, but she showed why she
is the two-time Richmond area player of the year on that goal. As
usual, Collegiate had long spells of possession, but the Titans fought
hard and won many 50/50 balls. The Cougars 4th goal was unfortunate as
the usually sure-handed Jessica Addison ('11) had a routine save go
through her hands for a goal. Addison has been brilliant for Trinity
all year, and made a number of key saves on this day, but the 4th goal
was one that she would love to have back. Trinity fought gamely until
the final whistle and had a few late looks at goal, but ultimately the
frustration of not scratching on Collegiate continued. Lee Lee Watkins
('10) had a great game in the back for Trinity. Caitlin Sarlo ('08)
was once again brilliant in her defensive role frustrating one of the
Cougars top scorers in their 1v1 battle. The loss leaves Trinity with
a record of 3-2-1 in the LIS, and an overall mark of 8-4-3.
Player of the game: Caitlin Sarlo ('08)
April 29 Richmond Christian (3-1)
Trinity played with energy and emotion in their Senior Day victory over
Richmond Christian by a margin of 3-1. The Titans started all 11
healthy seniors (a 12th senior, Ashton Herbert is out with a fractured
foot). The seniors played for the first 20 minutes. The starting 11
were: Kathleen Watkins (2nd start of the season in nets), Desiree
Tunnell, Joanna Bolstad, Elizabeth Robertson, Kelsey Herbert, Caitlin
Sarlo, Annie Laurie McDonald, Ryan Brizzolara, Charlsey Kaufman,
Courtney Frayser, and Megan Culbertson. Trinity almost scored off of
the opening kick as Courtney Frayser blasted a shot just seconds into
the game which the RCS goalie was able to get a hand on, and deflect
against the goal post. The seniors did play with some nerves early,
and Richmond Christian played their typical physical style. In the
20th minute, the Titans brought on some underclass subs, but it was 2
seniors who immediately put the team ahead with Kaufman finding
Culbertson for the opening goal. About 10 minutes later, the Warriors
got on the board with an incredible goal. Their sweeper made a tackle
just outside her own box, and carried the ball forward to the Trinity
penalty area. Remarkably no one was able to take the ball off of her
foot, and she lofted a shot in over Watkins. The Warriors were
ecstatic to have tied the match, and Trinity found itself at a loss to
explain how they were tied in a match that they had seemingly
controlled. Shortly thereafter, the Titans suffered another blow as
key defender Allie Goldstein ('09) went down with an injured ankle.
Just before halftime, Trinity seized back the momentum. After Courtney
Camden ('09) had a shot go off of the goalie, Culbertson rebounded and
drew another save. This time the rebound fell to Lauren Camden ('11)
who put away the goal in only her second varsity game (after leading
the JV team in scoring). Trinity went to half leading 2-1, but feeling
that it could have been more. The second half saw the Titans finally
start to match RCS' physical play, and then Trinity begin to dominate.
The Titans hit the post 3 more times (including a brilliant shot by
Watkins who had moved into the field), and Courtney Frayser ('08)
brought the Titans a much-deserved goal with 20 minutes to play. The
final 15 minutes saw the seniors get to finish the match. They played
wonderfully, but were unable to tally a final goal. The postgame
speeches by the 12 seniors were a wonderful combination of sentiment,
emotion, reflection, advice, and humor. The seniors, who have brought
the program so far, demonstrated immense class and poise in their
speeches. When they arrived as freshmen, there was no girls soccer
program to speak of at Trinity. As the seniors are on the eve of
departing, Trinity stands poised to host its' first LIS tournament
game, and have a great shot at a first ever state tournament berth.
The entire school community salutes our 12 seniors for their massive
impact on Trinity girls sports, gained through passion and commitment.

May 1 at Goochland (2-3)
Trinity lost an exciting, wide open match on a beautiful evening at
Goochland by a score of 2-3. Goochland opened the match with energy
and took the game to Trinity. But 15 minutes in, the Titans struck
first against the run of play. Trinity caught the Bulldogs defense
off-guard, and Megan Culbertson ('08) got by Goochland's defense to
open the scoring. Goochland responded with 2 goals in quick succession
by long-time Trinity nemesis Amy Zickafoose. Just when it looked as
though Trinity might get blown off the field, the Titans settled in and
begin to play better soccer. Culbertson tallied a 2nd goal before
half-time, and the game went to the break 2-2. The 2nd half saw both
teams with a number of scoring opportunities, but Goochland converted a
long, but brilliant shot by their center mid. Trinity pressed on, and
the Bulldog keeper had to make at least one excellent save. Mary
Virginia Long ('11) ran incredibly hard for all 80 minutes chasing the
very skilled and speedy #7 from Goochland. Sage Timberline ('11) cam
up to the varsity after spending most of the season on JV, and she
played almost the entire match and was very effective.
Player of the game: Sage Timberline ('11)
May 6 LIS Semifinal St. Gertrude (1-1) (Trinity wins 3-1 on PKs)
In the LIS Semifinal on a perfect afternoon at Trinity, the Titans
knocked out the Gators of St. Gertrude in a penalty kick shootout. It
was a thrilling match that saw emotion, physical play, and both teams
stretched to the brink. The first half saw neither team score,
although St. Gertrude had more possession and shots. The second half
brought more edge of your seat action as the ball went back and forth.
Neither team could really retain possession or build anything, but the
commitment was massive from both sides. Finally the Gators broke
through with a header goal after Trinity could not clear a corner
kick. Showing the character that has brought them through all season,
the Titans responded almost immediately. Desiree Tunnell ('08) struck
a beautiful free kick from just inside midfield that Megan Culbertson
('08) headed towards the far post. Mary Virginia Long ('11) met it
in-stride and blasted the ball into the back of the net. The match was
now tied with over 20 minutes left in the second half. The Gators
pressed numbers forward, but the Titans stayed extremely organized.
Jessica Addison ('11) came off her line to cut off a massive scoring
chance for the Gators. Trinity's Kathleen Watkins ('08) came on late,
and almost scored a game winner. The whistle blew, and the match went
to overtime. Neither team could mount an attack (though not for lack
of trying) in the 10 extra minutes, and the tournament match went to
penalties. It was Trinity's second experience at the massively
exciting, but often criticized way of breaking a tie. In the first
time through PKs, the Titans fell short against Highland at the VES
Tournament. But that experience gave Trinity the confidence and
experience to pull through on this occasion. Trinity struck first on a
goal by Courtney Camden ('09). The Gators answered to level it at
1-1. Megan Culbertson ('08) put Trinity ahead to stay with her penalty
conversion. Addison then made the first of 3 huge saves. After
Desiree Tunnell ('08) calmly and coolly put Trinity up 3-1, Addison
stopped another shot. Trinity's 4th shooter had a chance to end the
match, but the Gators keeper made a save. Just when it looked as if
St. Gertrude would get back in the match, Addison saved yet another
penalty and victory belonged to the Titans. Bedlam kicked off on the
pitch as the Titans celebrated their historic win. In 3 games against
nemesis St. Gertrude, the Titans went undefeated, and the win advanced
Trinity to its' first ever appearance in the LIS Championship. So many
Titans players played massive roles in the win, and it was truly a team
victory. In addition to the players of the game, other great
performances were turned in by: Tunnell, Caitlin Sarlo ('08), Elizabeth
Robertson ('08), and Lee Lee Watkins ('10).

May 8 LIS Championship at Collegiate (0-4)
Trinity competeted valliantly, but came up short in the LIS championship game against Collegiate.
The final score was 4-0 in favor of the Cougars, but the game was competitive throughout.
Collegiate scored on a corner kick in the 12th minute, but Trinity then settled in.
The Titans stayed very organized, and while Collegiate dominated possession,
they were not able to score again in the first half. Courtney Camden ('09) was all over the field
for Trinity. With the score still at 1-0 with 25 minutes left
Collegiate started to get frustrated. It looked as of the Titans might be able to pull the upset,
but a Cougar long-ball over the top led to a foot race. The Collegiate player won that race, and then struck the
ball into the net at the near post. Shortly thereafter, Mary Virginia Long ('11) who had done a remarkable job on
Collegiate star, Molly McKeon, had to come out of the game due to her chronic hamstring problems. McKeon took
advantage of her absence and scored the third goal right after Long went to the bench. Collegiate got another goal late on a shot that
was blasted from just inside midfield. It was a committed effort by the Titans in their first ever LIS
Championship game, but ultimately Collegiate retained possession of the trophy.
After the game, Caitlin Sarlo ('08) and Courtney Camden ('09) were honored by being named
to the all-LIS team.
Player of the game: Courtney Camden ('09)
May 9 at Henrico (4-1)
Trinity ended the regular season by spoiling Henrico's Senior Night
with a 4-1 victory. On a lovely, cool evening the Titans got off to a
slow start, but ultimately pulled out a good performance under the
lights. The Warriors struck first earning a goal about 10 minutes into
the match as Trinity opened very flat. After wholesale substitutions,
Trinity woke up. The Titans assaulted Henrico's goal for the remainder
of the first half, but Henrico's goalie made a number of fine saves.
Finally with a few minutes remaining in the first half, Trinity broke
through. Lauren Camden ('11) scored off of an assist from sister
Courtney Camden ('09) to draw the game level. Right before halftime,
Desiree Tunnell ('08) played a perfect long ball over the top of
Henrico's defense which Megan Culbertson ('08) collected and calmly
dribbled into the box and finished into the net. With a 2-1 lead at
the half, Trinity kept up the energy and effort into half 2. Courtney
Camden ('09) got a goal for herself off of an assist from Kathleen
Watkins ('08), and then Lauren Camden scored a 2nd goal on a beautiful
shot over the keeper's head from nearly 35 yards out. The
underclassmen got to play together for a spell, highlighted by the
varsity debut of Molly Banta ('12). The game ended with the seniors on
the field playing together one last time. After the win, Trinity was
left to wait to hear their fate on a state tournament bid. Ultimately
the season was rewarded with the #6 seed in the State Tournament, and a
matchup with #3 Bishop Sullivan Catholic in Va. Beach.
Player of the game: Katie Markunas ('09)
May 13 VIS Quarterfinal at Bishop Sullivan (1-3)
Trinity Episcopal (#6) traveled to Bishop Sullivan Catholic (#3) in
Virginia Beach for the quarterfinals of the VIS Division 1 state soccer
tournament. On a windy, clear day an exciting match saw Trinity fall
short 3-1. The Titans struck first. Charlsey Kaufman ('08) threw the
ball in to Lee Lee Watkins ('10) in the box, and Watkins turned and
blasted a left-footed strike into the net for her first goal of the
season just 8 minutes into the match. Trinity continued to play with
great energy for the entire first 20 minutes, and they did not look
like a team coming off of a nearly 2.5 hour bus trip. At the midway
point of the first half, the Crusaders started to seize control of the
match. The attacked down the wings, and they looked for their talented
striker, Caroline Banks (the TCIS player of the year). With Trinity on
the back foot, BSC scored twice in a 3 minute span (in the 25th and
28th minute) to gain a 2-1 lead. The score remained 2-1 until
halftime. Trinity opened the 2nd half with renewed focus. Courtney
Camden ('09) had a number of good chances on goal, and she was
dominating the midfield. Allie Goldstein ('09) was everywhere.
Desiree Tunnell ('08) played her sweeper position to perfection. Mary
Virginia Long ('11), Caitlin Sarlo ('08), and Sarah Sheppard ('09) took
BSC's most dangerous players out of the match, and Jessica Addison
('11) controlled the box. Up front, Courtney Frayser ('08) and Megan
Culbertson ('08) troubled the Crusaders back line, and Charlsey Kaufman
('08), Lee Lee Watkins ('10), and Sage Timberline ('11) covered tons of
space on the wings. It was an exciting, wide open half of soccer.
With 7 minutes to play, and the Titans clearly not wanting the season
to end, Jordan Brown ('09) asked to be put in the game. Brown had been
out since March 23 with knee surgery, and had only played in the first
2 games of the season. She was literally in blue jeans when she asked
to go in. After assessing that she was serious, Coach Hamlin gave the
green light. Katie Markunas ('09) volunteered her shorts, shin guards,
and socks, and Brown raced to get ready. It was an incredibly dramatic
moment. Meanwhile, the Titans were pushing numbers forward looking for
an equalizing goal. With Trinity only playing 2 defenders in the back,
BSC hit a counter attack. A perfectly struck shot bounced off the post
and in with just about 1 minute to play. Brown played courageously for
her first time back on the pitch, but it was too little too late.
While the Titans lost, they showed that they belonged on the field with
the #3 ranked team in the state. Trinity had every reason to be proud,
not just of their performance on this day, but also with their
remarkable, historic season.
