Metropolitan
Museum of Art Timeline of Art History
One of the best sites on the Internet about art history, here objects in the collection from around the world illustrate time periods and places. Clicking on the timeline and choosing a region to explore will give you an historic overview of the time period chosen, representative art works, and links to more information. Additionally, you can search by time period, location, theme, or artistic movement. There are also in depth examinations of special topics.
National Gallery of Art
Click on search to browse the collection by artist's name, title of piece, or subject. Click on "The Collection" to look through paintings, sculpture, prints and photographs by geographical area and time period. There are online tours and in depth artist studies which can provide you with a great deal of information.
The Louvre Museum, Paris
Search under sculpture, paintings, prints or decorative arts and then choose to browse through selected works. You can then sort the images by date or browse through thumbnails of images. Clicking on the thumbnails gives you more information about the object and the artist. The timeline and map functions under each genre may also be helpful.
The British National Gallery
Paintings from Western Europe from 1250 to 1900 are represented in this collection. It is helpful to have an artist's name to search for, but you can also use the "Artists at a Glance" feature to get to artist biographies with links to their paintings. The "Collection Explorer" includes a timeline with discussions of various paintings and artists from the time period. Get to these features by clicking on "The Collection" on the home page.
The Tate Museum
This museum is the national collection of British art from the 16th century to the present. Click on Tate Collection and choose from an alphabetical list of artists or search by subject.
Hermitage Museum
This website is from the huge museum in St. Petersburg, Russia. Click on Collection Highlights to access what the musem owns. In the "Russian Culture" section there are historical overviews of different periods in Russia. Clicking on Digital Collection allows you to browse by artist, genre or school. To use the search features you need to have java installed.
